Every fall, humpback whales make an impressive journey from the cold waters of the North Pacific Ocean to the warm, inviting waters surrounding Hawaiʻi. During this remarkable migration, they come together to reunite with one another, engage in mating rituals, and give birth to their newborn calves. The entire community of humpback whales plays an active role in nurturing and protecting their young. Adult whales patiently teach these lively, curious babies how to breach and play joyfully at the surface, especially along the shallow coastal shelf. For me, whale season holds a deeply special place in my heart, as I have the privilege of witnessing this ancient and awe-inspiring cycle of birth, connection, and joy—whether from a boat out at sea or simply catching a fleeting glimpse from the shore.
